Quick Hello To All…

Unfortunately it has been a few weeks since our last post. The Dirshu schedule has already reached Simun 203. We will therefore be skipping from 192 to 204 with the intention of slowly making up the lost Simonim…

We will likely be taking a break through Pesach.
Wishing all a Chag Kasher Vsameach…

Is Red Wine White Wine? Is Grape Juice Orange Juice?

Halacha Orach Chaim 175

I hope you all don’t mind an extra post today in your inbox… I had a day off, and wanted to squeeze in the last post on Hatov Vhameitiv.

In our last post we pointed out that if there is a question whether the second wine is better than the first, we can assume that it is, and Hatov Vhameitiv can be recited.

There is one exception to this rule. The Bach and Magen Avrohom write that white wine is assumed to have therapeutic properties that are not found in red wine. Because of this, a Bracha of Hatov Vhameitiv is only recited on red wine after white wine, if we know for sure that the red wine is of a higher quality.

There is a discussion among contemporary Poskin if one should recite Hatov Vhameitiv after grape juice. Obviously we do not recite this Bracha on wine after drinking orange juice or apple juice. The question is, what is grape juice? Is grape juice considered wine regarding this Bracha, or is it considered orange juice?

Reb Elyashiv rules that grape juice is like orange juice regarding this Halacha, as it does not bring joy like wine. Dayan Fisher rules that grape juice has the same Halacha as wine, and Hatov Vhameitiv should be recite if all requirements previously mentioned are fulfilled.

As a side note, Hatov Vhameitiv is only recited when drinking with others.
