Bracha On Pas Akum and Paltrin

Halacha Orach Chaim 168

There is a prevalent custom today by some to avoid eating Pas Paltrin. Pas Paltrin is Pas Akum made in a factory. All agree that one may not eat Pas Akum. The reason for this is because we are afraid of Chasnus. Being that the concern of Chasnus is therefore diminished, some permit eating Pas Paltrin.

Regarding Brachos, if someone has Pas Yisroel and Pas Paltrin on the table together, and the Pas Paltrin is more desirable, he can make the Bracha on either one, as they both have a merit. One is Pas Yisroel, and the other is more desirable.

Interestingly, Mishna Berura brings an opinion that recommends the Pas Paltrin be removed from the table if one does not eat such bread. The reason for this is as follows. Since he may be required to recite the Bracha on that Pas, as it is more desirable, and not eating it is only an added stringency, it is best for it to be removed, since he may actually be required to recite the Bracha on it.

A Guest come to your home. They are careful with Pas Paltrin. You are not careful with such Pas. Mechaber rules that the Baal Habayis who eats Pas Paltrin should not necessarily recite the Bracha on Pas Yisroel that is less desirable to him, in order to accommodate the guests. This is because the Mevarech is obligated to recite the Bracha on the bread that is more desirable to him.

When discussing these Halachos, Mechaber and Mishna Berura use the word Pas Akum. Being that Pas Akum is forbidden, it is my understand that this discussion is dealing with Pas Paltrin rather than Pas Akum. The reason for this is because it is eaten by some, but not eaten by others.
